As he spoke, Evie released the breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding. Still, she was apprehensive. His one-word reply didn’t give her any indication of whether or not he had been drinking - but typically when he texted her this late there wasn’t much of a question. However, he hadn’t come in with that wild look in his eye, the one that told her she should take cover immediately. If nothing else, that was at least a good sign.
Genevieve was hesitant. There had been too many time that she had thought he was calm, he was himself, only to be knocked to the ground for her foolishness. Nowadays she knew better. She made no sudden movements. Despite her desire to hold him, to touch him, she restrained herself. No, Julian was the one who needed to make the first move. Evie had learned to always be on the defense. If he was docile, she could respond to him the way she wanted. But if he was hostile, she’d at least have some kind of leverage on him if he tried to hurt her.
There wasn’t really much that Julian could take in from his surroundings or what the expression on his girlfriend’s face even was. He didn’t know what to do or if he should even do anything at all. He shouldn’t even be there to begin with. Whenever he had been drinking and ended up with her all he would do was hurt her. After every time that Julian had hit her most would think that she knew better than to allow him to come over but she let him come to her every time.
Julian and Evie would end up standing there all night if one of them didn’t make the first move and Julian knew that he was the one that always made the first move but there was something stopping him tonight. He wasn’t completely drunk off his ass and that he wasn’t fumbling over his thoughts and movements. There was a slight feeling of fear lingering in the atmosphere and he knew exactly who it was coming from. The last thing that he had ever wanted was to make Evie fearful of him but he couldn’t manage to do that. Everything that was wrong with her perfect world was him.
She drew her knees to her chest and hugged her pillow. He would be here any second.
Evie almost laughed at how pathetic she must look. She vaguely remembered the days when she would have been out of her mind excited for Julian to come over in the middle of the night. It was all very Romeo-esque in those days. Now all she could think about was if she had the strength to take his blows tonight.
The night was slow. A little too slow for Julian’s liking but lately nothing had been to his liking. His dad was getting on his ass even more about school and what he did on his free time that Julian was sure he would explode at any moment. Julian needed to get out of that house but he wanted to do it in a way that he wouldn’t ever have to go back. Getting his own place was something that he had been thinking about for a while but he didn’t seem to be making any advances with the plan.
As soon as his parents had left the house for their usual evening dinner at some restaurant where all the businessmen and their wives went to, he made way to one of his very dear friends. Alcohol.
